Random notes from the Concordia Cobbers football team as they prepare for Saturday’s game at St. John’s. The game is the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Both teams have 1-1 records heading into the game.
- Junior running back Chris Gilson is out for 3-6 weeks after suffering a dislocated elbow in last weekend’s 42-0 victory against Valley City State. “That stinks because he is one of our better receivers … that stings us,” Cobbers head coach Terry Horan said.
- Junior defensive end Robin Wisner (knee) and sophomore defensive tackle Reed Hefta (concussion) are both doubtful for the St. John’s game.
- Cobbers freshman running back Trent Johnson is coming off a solid effort against Valley City State. Johnson rushed for 93 yards on 10 attempts. “His role will continue to grow as he continues to grow in our offense,” Horan said.
- The Cobbers are 30-40-6 record in the all-time series against St. John’s, dating back to 1923.
- St. John’s senior quarterback Joe Boyle told St. Cloud Times reporter Frank Rajkowski: “This is where our season starts now.” Click here for the complete blog post. Boyle had a huge games against the Cobbers last season. He completed 13 of 23 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on six attempts. That performance sparked the Johnnies to a 31-19 victory at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
- St. John’s and the Cobbers have the top two all-time winning percentages in the MIAC. The Johnnies are first with a .710 winnining percentage (410-161-22) and Concordia is second with a .640 winning percentage (361-199-18). St. Thomas ranks third with a .629 winning percentage (370-215-14).
- Former Fargo Shanley standout David Burns is a starting defensive end for St. John’s. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior has one tackle and one quarterback hurry through two games.
